Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki chaired, on Wednesday, February 6th, 2019, a meeting with the members of the thematic working group on equality and parity.
At the onset of the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives lauded the efforts of the members of the thematic group and their keenness to create a favorable environment to bring this experience to success despite the encountered obstacles in different areas, noting that the Moroccan society approves of this pioneering experience by the Committee, which enriches the Moroccan parliamentary experience. In this regard, he stated, “What makes us prouder is that the question of women is one of the issues that brings together all the components of House of Representatives in a spirit of consensus and great maturity."
Mr. El Malki invited the thematic working group members to remain composed and work with a strong will to bring this social experience to success in all its social, intellectual, and cultural aspects, and constantly inform the House's bodies of all the activities of the group. He also called for thinking about elaborating a proposal to amend the House's Rules of Procedure to upgrade the group into a standing committee, adding that this step requires legal consultations and innovations.
The House's Speaker also highlighted the importance of inventorying all women-related legislation approved by the House of Representatives to identify their possible flaws, explaining that "the issue of women is a long societal struggle as its results will only be conceivable in the far future."
On her side, the new chairperson of the thematic working group Khadija Ziyani, who replaced Touria Faraj at the chair of the group in alignment with the alternation system, lauded the support the House's Speaker provides the group with. On the same occasion, she presented the group's achievements during the last six months and its work plan for the next period.
According to the House’s Rules of Procedure, the thematic working group on equality and parity has to run studies and present proposals and recommendations to implement the legislative initiative of deputies and develop the performance of the House and its bodies in Government control and the evaluation of public policies relative to equality, parity, and integrating the gender approach.
