Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki held a meeting on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020, at the House’s headquarters, with the members of the Thematic Working Group on Equality and Parity, on the occasion of the handover of the chairpersonship of the Group between its former chairperson, Deputy Mounira Rahoui from the Istiqlali Group for Unity and Egalitarianism, and the new chairperson, Deputy Fatima Zahra Nazih from the Haraki Group.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives commended the efforts of the members of the Thematic Working Group in promoting the situation of Moroccan women and in enshrining equality and parity as defined in the Constitution. He also noted that women issues are a priority for the legislative institution and one of the main challenges of consolidating democracy in our country.
Mr. El Malki lauded the serious work of the Thematic Working Group during the recent period despite the exceptional circumstances emanating from the propagation of COVID-19. On the same occasion, he commended the positive rotation of the Group's chairpersonship between the women deputies. He stated that this action “reflects the maturity of the women parliamentarians and the female officials in our country.”
After thanking the former chairperson, the Speaker of the House of Representatives congratulated the new one and called the Thematic Working Group for further work and openness to shed light on Moroccan women's role in enshrining the democratic choice of the Kingdom.
It should be noted that following the provisions of the Rules of Procedure of the House of Representatives, the Thematic Working Group on Equality and Parity is in charge of running studies and submitting proposals and recommendations on the implementation of the legislative initiative of the House members, advancing the performance of the House and its organs in the control of Government action and evaluation of public policies that regard parity, equality, and the inclusion of the gender-based approach.
