Speaker of House of Representatives Habib El Malki held a meeting on Wednesday, July 15th, 2020, at the House of Representatives, with President of National Human Rights Council (CNDH) Amina Bouayach. The two parties discussed the means to advance cooperation ties between the two institutions.
On this occasion, the two parties highlighted the development of the Kingdom in human rights and the qualitative gains achieved under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him. The two parties also reviewed the situation of human rights in our country, citing the constitutional provisions that stipulate the Kingdom's commitment to human rights as universally recognized.
In the same respect, the President of the National Human Rights Council and the Speaker of the House of Representatives noted the importance of advancing cooperation ties between the two institutions. They also agreed on renewing the partnership agreement between them to address the developments in the area, taking into account the increasing importance of promoting human rights at the national level, and on the legislative level in particular.
Ms. Bouayach noted the pioneering role of parliaments in promoting the culture of human rights following the relevant international laws. In this context, she focused specifically on the Belgrade Principles that define the relationship between parliaments and the national human rights institutions.
For his part, Mr. Habib El Malki lauded the National Human Rights Council's contribution to improving the legal texts that the House of Representatives examines by filing requests to provide its opinion following the Rules of Procedure of the House.
It should be noted that, in accordance with the provisions of Article 160 of the Constitution, several institutions and bodies, including the National Human Rights Council, must present to the Parliament a report on their activities, at least once a year. The report is discussed within the House of Representatives upon the decision of the House's Board in this regard.
