The Moroccan House of Representatives hosts on February 15-16, 2024, in Rabat, the 17thSession of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and the 8thSummit of Speakers, in addition to the meetings of the Assembly’s Bureau, Enlarged Bureau, and Standing Committees.
During these meetings, the participants will discuss the developments in the Mediterranean region and the role of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean in Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the 21st century. Besides, the participants will also attend the reading of the “Call of the Future” addressed by the students of the Euromed University of Fez and adopt the reports and recommendations of the Standing Committees and Working Group. The event will also feature the transfer of the rotating presidency of the Assembly to the northern shore of the Mediterranean, particularly to the Spanish House of Representatives.
It should be noted that the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco is one of the founders of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and has held its presidency since April 2022. It had also hosted several of its sessions and meetings of its Standing Committees.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean is a space for Mediterranean dialogue and cooperation. It convenes in a plenary session at least once a year and gathers the elected representatives of the European Union countries and their partners from the countries of the Southern Mediterranean Shore. The Assembly comprises 280 members representing 43 Parliaments: 42 national Parliaments and the European Parliament, equally divided between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
The Assembly includes five Standing Committees: the Committee on Political Affairs, Security, and Human Rights; the Committee on Improving Quality of Life, Exchanges Between Civil Societies, and Culture; the Committee on Women's Rights in Euro-Mediterranean Countries; the Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, Social Affairs, and Education; and the Committee on Energy, Environment, and Water. It also comprises a Working Group in charge of the Financing of the Assembly and Revision of the Rules of Procedure. The Assembly’s Bureau coordinates its proceedings and represents it, while the Enlarged Bureau comprises the members of the Bureau, the Chairpersons of the Standing Committees, and the Chairperson of the Working Group.
