Istanbul: Moroccan Parliamentary Delegation Takes Part in Meeting of PA-UfM Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, Social Affairs, and Education

A delegation representing the two Houses of Parliament is taking part in the meeting of the Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, Social Affairs, and Education, under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, taking place on January 27, 2023, in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Moroccan parliamentary delegation includes Rep. Meriem Rmili (Group of the National Rally of Independents), Rep. Adil Essoubai (Haraki Group), Cllr. Abderrahman Drissi (Haraki Group), Cllr. Abdelilah Haidar (Socialist Group), and Cllr. Abdelkarim Mahdi (Group of the General Conglomerate of Moroccan Enterprises).

The meeting falls under the meetings of the PA-UfM standing committees, which contribute to enriching the debate, dialogue, and elaboration of recommendations on several important questions related to security, human rights, economic, financial, and social affairs, in addition to matters related to culture, energy, environment, waters, and women's rights in Euro-Mediterranean countries.

The meeting featured the adoption of the Committee’s agenda and a comprehensive presentation on food security and the challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region.

In their intervention during the meeting, the Moroccan delegation highlighted the distinguished position the Kingdom of Morocco holds at the international level in food security. In the same respect, they noted that such a position is the fruit of a vision, national policies, and strategic orientations that the Kingdom has been implementing under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah glorify him.

Besides, the delegation stressed the imperative of consolidating the national policies on food security by enacting national laws that would form a legal framework for parliamentary action with regard to achieving food security and sufficiency. They also noted the importance of reinforcing parliamentary ties between the standing committees concerned with food security in the legislative assemblies of all world countries.

In the same regard, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation called for solidifying North-South Cooperation following a participatory approach aiming to achieve food security and curb its repercussions.

It should be noted that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) was established in Naples on December 3, 2003, upon a resolution of the Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The Assembly held its first session in Athens on March 22-23, 2004. It aims to provide assistance and parliamentary contribution to the consolidation and development of the Barcelona Process. It is currently presided over by the Moroccan Parliament in the person of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Rachid Talbi El Alami.
