House of Representatives Takes Part in High-level Parliamentary Conference on “Understanding the Terrorist Threat in Africa: New Challenges and Necessary Measures”

A delegation from the House of Representatives took part in a High-level Parliamentary Conference on “Understanding the Terrorist Threat in Africa: New Challenges and Necessary Measures,” organized by the UNOCT Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism, in partnership with the African Parliamentary Union (APU) and the Shura Council of the State of Qatar on March 30-31, 2022.

The delegation comprised:

-      Rep. Zineb Simou (Group of the National Rally of Independents);

-      Rep. Abdelilah Amehdi (Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism);

-      Rep. Ahmed Ched (Haraki Group).

The agenda of the Conference included four work sessions that discussed the following themes:

    1. Current and emerging terrorist threats in Africa;
    2. Necessary measures to curb, prevent and address the new terrorist threats;
    3. International programs and projects for technical assistance in combatting terrorism and preventing violent extremism;
    4. Needs of African parliaments with regard to technical assistance and capacity building in combatting terrorism and extremism.

On this occasion, the members of the delegation of the House of Representatives delivered pertinent addresses that had a marked influence on the course of the sessions, where they focused on the following matters:

-   Underlying causes of terrorist threats to the African continent;

-   Emerging patterns of terrorism in Africa;

-   Efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco, within the framework of its openness towards Africa, to support and assist African States in countering terrorism and extremism through the adoption of various forms of cooperation;

-   Pioneering and exemplary experience of the Kingdom of Morocco in addressing the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism at the national and international levels through proactive and multidimensional approaches, including security, legal, religious and socio-economic approaches;

-   Role of parliamentarians in assisting Governments and non-governmental actors in combating terrorism and extremism;

-   Feasible mechanisms to be adopted by the African legislative institutions to prepare a standard model to combat terrorism and extremism.

On the sidelines of this Conference, the Moroccan parliamentary delegation held intensive bilateral meetings with several heads of participating delegations, during which they discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and give new impetus to the relations between the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco and its counterparts taking part in this Conference.
