Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Zaina Idhali, took part, on August 12, 2022, in San José, Costa Rica in the 15th meeting of the International Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Climate Change and the Eighth meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Women, under the Forum of Speakers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico (FOPREL).
The meetings, which took place at the seat of the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly in San José, focused on discussing several themes related to climate change, migration, and women.
On this occasion, Rep. Zaina Idhali noted that the Kingdom of Morocco has been deploying enormous efforts in dismantling illegal migrant smuggling networks and aborting unlawful migration attempts. The Moroccan model in this area relies on solidarity, responsibility, and international cooperation, rendering it a regional example in the field of migration management.
The Deputy Speaker also underscored that the Kingdom of Morocco had made great strides in environment preservation and exploitation of renewable energies through adopting a solid legal arsenal as an efficient mechanism to protect the environment and support efforts to fight pollution. Rep. Zaina Idhali added that women significantly impact migration and climate change, which requires the global community to intensify its efforts to protect their status.
On the sidelines of the two meetings, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives held a bilateral meeting with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica, Mr. Rodrigo Arias Sanchez, where they discussed ways of parliamentary cooperation. During the encounter, the Deputy Speaker noted that the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Costa Rica share the same challenges and problems, which requires them to consolidate bilateral cooperation.
It should be noted that the Kingdom of Morocco joined FOPREL as an observer member in 2014. The Forum, whose seat is located in Managua, Nicaragua, gathers ten States: Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
