The House of Representatives will host a joint meeting with the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance on March 1-6, 2023, and organizes, in the same respect, the Extraordinary Session of the said Committee on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the seat of the House in Rabat.
The meeting aims to consolidate the political and parliamentary dialogue between the House of Representatives, as an Observer Member in this Parliamentary Committee, and the representatives of the peoples of the Member States of the Pacific Alliance: Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico.
The program of the meeting includes an address from the President pro tempore of the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance, an address by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in addition to the addresses of the Heads of the participating delegations from the Parliaments of Chile, Peru, and Colombia.
The meeting will cover the exchange of experiences in the areas of migration in the Member States of the Pacific Alliance, which would serve as an opportunity to shed light on the outstanding Moroccan experience at the regional and continental levels in managing migration. The meeting will also feature the presentation of the periodic report of the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance on the Session held in Mexico, before the adoption of the Final Declaration.
During their visit, the members of the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance will hold meetings with several Moroccan officials and will pay a visit to the city of Laayoune.
The Pacific Alliance is an inclusive regional initiative involving four countries: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, and more than 60 Observer Members. The Alliance constitutes around 40% of the GDP of Latin America.
The Speakers of the Parliaments of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru decided on May 6, 2013, to create a joint parliamentary committee in Bogota, Colombia, to monitor the implementation of the framework agreement of the Pacific Alliance. The House of Representatives has been an Observer Member within the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance since 2020, being the first Arab and African legislative institution to enjoy this status.
Following the measures taken by the Kingdom of Morocco to secure the Guergarat crossing, the Parliamentary Committee in Charge of Monitoring the Pacific Alliance issued a declaration on December 10, 2023, where it reiterated its full support to the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only political solution under the aegis of the United Nations and the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco. The Committee also stressed its support for the measures taken by the Kingdom to maintain security and ensure the movement of goods, people, and services at the Guergarat crossing.
